SmartEnergy & British Gas remote heating control

Post by timg »

I wonder if someone can help me.

I currently have the British Gas remote heating control installed. A fantastic product but I want to expand this by bolting on the SmartEnergy system.

This would enable me to control the SmartPlugs that I currently can't control with the remote heating control system.

My question is - Can the heating control and SmartEnergy use the same nano hub?

and

Can you have both the heating control and SmartEnergy visible on one portal? (Alertme or British Gas)

Hi timg,

I've got the new BG S&S Hub up and working and having the new heating controller installed tomorrow. I've been told you need two hubs but that they are working on combining them, not sure about the smart energy but you can control the smartplugs via the Safe & Secure so I'm assuming its the same with smart energy! And, Yes you do need two login's to set things up, which is a bit of a pain as you can only have one instance of the app installed and you'll need to keep logging out and back in to change control from the mobile.

Glad you like the heating, looking forward to having it all working when I get home!

Coops - I'm wondering if you were to have an AlertMe account it would give you further functionality than the British Gas portal that you have. Surely all of the products are compatible so there should be no reason why they couldn't combine the hubs and portals. I am very interested in S&S but it put me off having an extra hub.

I wonder if anyone has the heating control added to their normal Alertme login?

Fair question, I just got rid of my Alertme System to get the S&S one! The devices are largely compatible switching them across (I've had the odd issue with a couple of devices just not playing ball).

Maybe someone else can answer the question - you can see how the two systems can come together and I don't know why they haven't got it sorted already....

All said the two hubs are not that much of an issue for me, I will just use a home plug for the networking and stick the boiler hub out of the way.

Reviving an old thread here, but I've only just found out the AlertMe devices are compatible with the British Gas Safe & Secure system. Good to know my investment in many devices won't be wasted if I go to S&S.

My question is this; are the S&S and Remote Heating Control system integrated in any way? The most obvious use case is to prevent the heating turning on if nobody is in the house but from what I can gather, BG require you to have two hubs and two accounts.

If only AlertMe had stuck to its guns and kept producing a DIY system which all integrated nicely.

At the moment, the two systems are very separate. Why this should be the case, I have absolutely no idea; they use the same technologies, but for whatever reason (and this may well be at the behest of British Gas) AlertMe have not yet integrated the two.

So yes, if you want both S&S and Remote Heating, you will require the larger rectangular BG Hub and the tiny Remote Heating Hub (which I believe is based on the current Energy Kit hardware still available direct from AlertMe).
Alerty - you could control your AlertMe system with my third-party app for iPhone and iPod Touch. Used to be available on iTunes!
